The House: Chapter 4

Previously, Chapter 1 . Chapter 2 . Chapter 3 (<- click any chapter to read)

When I opened my eyes, I was not in the house. It was past midnight and the moon shone brightly under the night sky. It was the same dream I’ve had the last time. The only thing different was the place.

Old oak trees surrounded me as I walked barefooted in the cold muddy ground.

“Why the hell would I not have any foot wear at this late hour?” I kept asking myself.

The cold breeze embraced me as I took every step of the way.

There was a road just a few meters away from where I was standing. I hurriedly walk towards it hoping there would be cars passing by. But when I stepped on the road, it was very quiet.

I reached to my side pocket to reach my phone, but the only thing that was there was the photo. The photo I saw earlier.

If the photo was still here, then this must not be a dream.

“Am I sleep walking again?” I asked myself.

“Ugh… fck it. I need to get out of here.”

I walked past countable trees but the road seemed to have no end.

“I just need to get out of here”, I kept murmuring.

.

Just a few steps away, I saw an old Sycamore tree. It was like the one I saw in my dream before but this one was different because it looks like it got hit by a car.

Just when I came to inspect the tree, a voice called out to me.

“You’re here” the voice said.

When I turned to see who it was, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was Mike, the boy in my dream last time.

I held back then started speaking.

“How– are you— here?” I said in a shaky voice.

“Just, because I want to.” he replied.

“But– but that was just a dream before. You can’t be real.”

“Hell, yeah. I am real. And also– you weren’t dreaming. Everything that you’ve seen was real.”

“I’m confused. What’s going on?”

He sighed and started talking,

“A family died here. Right in front of us. Here in this tree.”

“Whatt?!… How?” I asked.

He let out a huge sigh, and started speaking.

“It was a car crash. As I’ve heard from the people around here was, there was a struggle that happened inside the car before the accident happened. Everyone died except for the mother.”

“Oh–that—that’s really sad.” I said in a low voice.

“You can say that. Their tomb is just around here. Those who died in this town gets buried in the same area as the others.”

“I think we should go pay our respects.” I stated.

“Sure. It’s this way.” he said as he lead the way.

.

When we arrived, the mist started to cover the place but it was not too much to cover the tombstones.

I followed him as I read the names we walked past by.

After a few steps, I saw a familiar name. Or so I must have read it wrong. I stopped and went near the tombstone.

When I read it aloud, my whole body shuddered.

“Mi—Mike Poulter” I said in a terrified voice.

My whole body felt cold as the mist continued to cover the place.

I turned my gaze at Mike as the moonlight revealed a ghostly face, smiling at me.

“You— you’re dead.” I said palely.

My body was shaking as I stood there. I need to get out of here.

As I was about to turn back and run, Mike turned his gaze at me.

“Where are you going? We haven’t paid our respects yet.” He said coldly.

“There’s the family’s tombstones.” he added as he pointed out on the tombstones two steps away from me.

I went to where he was pointing as I was trying to hide the horror inside me.

My body was shaking as I went over.

The moonlight shone brightly as the mist began to leave the place.

When I started to read the names, my body froze.

The family.

They were our names.
